Food supplements, fortified food, novel food, food for specific population groups

The Firm offers assistance and training on regulations concerning:


  • Food supplments

    Food to supplement the normal diet constituting a concentrated source of vitamins, minerals or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect (such as amino acids, essential fatty acids, fiber, botanicals and botanical extracts), marketed in unit doses.


  • Enriched or fortified food

    Food in which vitamins, minerals or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect have been added.


  • Novel Food

    Food that had not been consumed to a significant degree by humans in the EU before 15 May 1997, when the first Regulation on novel food came into force. It must comply with certain safety requirements before being placed on the market.


  • Food for special medical purposes

    Foods intended for the exclusive or partial feeding of people, including infants, whose nutritional requirements cannot be met by normal foods.
    These people:


    • Have a limited, impaired or disturbed capacity to take, digest, absorb, metabolize or excrete ordinary foodstuffs or certain nutrients contained therein or metabolites, or with other medically-determined nutrient requirements, and

    • Their dietary management cannot be achieved only by modification of the normal diet, even with the use of food supplements



  • Food for infants

    Foods specifically manufactured for infants (less than 12 months) and young children (1 to 3 years old), as described below.


    • Infant formulae: food used by infants during the first months of life and satisfying by themselves the nutritional requirements of such infants until the introduction of appropriate complementary feeding

    • Follow-on formulae: food used by infants when appropriate complementary feeding is introduced

    • Processed cereal baby-food and baby foods: food intended for use by infants when they are weaned and by young children as a supplement to their diet and/or for their progressive adaptation to ordinary food


Services provided by the firm

Operators who produce and sell such products will receive support in order to:

  • Know which ingredients they can use in making food and the quantities allowed

  • Get a compliance evaluation of their labelling and advertising practices with EU legislation in terms of mandatory food information, and nutritional and health claims

  • Receive assistance in dealing with administrative formalities to sell their products (national notification and authorization procedures, depending on the product, and EU authorization for novel foods)
